Finnish Cello Metal Comes To Seattle

If you’ve never heard of Apocalyptica, you don’t know what you’re missing. They’re a Finnish band comprised of three classically trained cellists and a drummer. They started in 1993 doing cello covers of Metallica, Pantera and Faith No More songs but over the years have come into their own and have started doing a lot more original material.

They have a new album that was just released in the US April 15th called Worlds Collide, which features among other songs a German version of David Bowie’s “Heroes”. Their first single “I’m Not Jesus” featuring Corey Taylor of Stone Sour/Slipknot is a very, very dark song about the whole Catholic church/molestation fiasco that’s been going on for years. I’m not a fan of “metal” by any means, but I really like it when musicians and bands do different things. Not to mention the sounds of the cello are absolutely beautiful and haunting.

Apocalyptica will be playing El Corazon this Friday April 18th. If you get the chance, you should check them out. I can only imagine how amazing they’d be live.

Very cool concept. I love it when people think outside the box with odd musical instruments. Don’t think I care too much what a bunch of Fins think about the Catholic church – that seems a real non sequitur – but the Metallica and Faith No More covers sound good.
