Blarch Badness 2008: The Brackets

So, the selection committee has met for the last few days trying to decide who is in and who is out of the tournament. There was the usual yelling, fighting, chair-throwing, and occasional moments of harmony. But finally, late last night, the committee emerged from their pizza-and-beer-induced stupor to put in my hands the lineup for this year’s Blarch Badness.

First off, the eight blogs that will be seeded in the bracket. Four of them, as mentioned before, were semifinalists last year and therefore have been awarded byes into round two:
USS Mariner
Lookout Landing
West Seattle Blog
Seattle Daily Photo

Four additional blogs were chosen by the Seattle Metblogs writers as being sufficiently meritorious to earn a bye (that is, their bribe checks cleared):
Capitol Hill Seattle
Defective Yeti
Vintage Seattle

The two “regions” have been dubbed “Coyote” and “Squirrel.” (thanks Michael)

The remaining 42 blogs will be playing in out of category-specific groups:

Religion/Politics/Great Pumpkin (i.e. the environment), Music, P-I bloggers, Food, People, Art/Fashion/Photography, Hood (neighborhood blogs), Friends/Enemies of Metblogs

You might notice that the “Sports” group has been replaced with “People.” Don’t worry, there are still sports blogs in the tourney.

The winner of each group moves into the bracket in Round Two. I know this is complicated, but bear with me. Here’s how Round Two looks:

Squirrel Bracket
USS Mariner vs. Religion/Politics/Great Pumpkin winner
Vintage Seattle vs. Food winner
Lookout Landing vs. Music winner
CHS vs. P-I winner

Coyote Bracket
West Seattle Blog vs Friends/Enemies winner
Hillku vs People winner
Seattle Daily Photo vs Hood winner
Defective Yeti vs. Art/Fashion/Photography winner

So, here are the groups:

Two of the groups have six blogs, while the rest have five. Yes, I’m insane. And I had to go find the URLs for each of them. I miss my family.

Each round will be open for one week, just like last year.

Unfortunately, a number of blogs didn’t make the final cut. Sorry Buzzworthy, Postman on Politics, Slumberland, all the Seattle Weekly blogs, all the Seattle Magazine blogs (but surely you could have voted us best of something this year, I mean, come on, you pretty much named everyone else I’ve listed best of something), Daily Score, Daily Grist (though, honestly, if you’d hired me for that job I interviewed for last fall…), Gothic Charm School, Rain City Guide, Radical Congruency, Scootin’ Old Skool, Sound Politics, Sonics bloggers, Rise and Fall of Mark Driscoll, those MyZIP blogs like, and all the Livejournalers and Voxers that live in Seattle. Maybe next year. Or maybe someone will offer a Blog NIT?

So there you have it. That’s the six weeks of hellfun that’s ahead of us! I’ll take any questions you have in the comments.

Yr welcome. Just remember to submit my award nomination for Adapted Bracket Names, not Original Bracket Names.

Yay! This is a good way to expose me (and everyone else) to some really good blogs that have been under the radar.

All right, P-I blogs! Tough contenders in the Friends/Enemies category (gulp). Let’s do this thing …

this would be more interesting if there could be a way to make some votes count more than others based on the merit of the voter. voter merit would be determined by snarky comment quality score – minutes spent making comments divided by aliases used across internets.

    We concede already.

Who the hell is Chris Pirillo, Kirida, or Eugene Cho? When you taking bets for the Final 4?

  7. Ryan H. (unregistered) on January 31st, 2008 @ 8:49 pm

Uh oh, Chris is going to be so hurt.

  8. kirida (unregistered) on February 1st, 2008 @ 7:19 am

I’m sort of excited about this. I don’t know why or even what it is, but hey, that’s my blog. Woot!

Can you make a sandwich out of a blarch?

  10. Eugene (unregistered) on February 1st, 2008 @ 10:50 pm

Seriously, who is this Eugene Cho?

And here I thought only 4 people read my blog. Who do I bribe with free Stumptown Coffee from our cafe?

  11. Brave New Leaf (unregistered) on February 3rd, 2008 @ 12:22 pm

Wow! I’m so honored to be nominated! I’d like to thank the Academy, et all.

I’m off to practice my fake smile and golf clap to appear to be a gracious loser when my opponents inevitably crush me.

But I’ll be crying inside. ;)

No offense to BallardAvenue, which I think is great, but have you guys seen the new We tore a page from the West Seattle Blog folks, and so far traffic is skyrocketing…

Eh, Slumberland didn’t deserve to be in it this year anyway. I need to get posting again.

  14. Sailor Girl (unregistered) on February 11th, 2008 @ 6:36 am

Hello! I’m portuguese, not an english native speaker, thus am having problems understanding how we vote. For example, how can I vote «Seattle Daily Photo»???

  15. Seattle Life (unregistered) on February 12th, 2008 @ 11:49 pm

Is it too late to get into the running. We just launched our Seattle Blog, but things are picking up quite nicely. I think, because some of our posts spread quickly through facebook and other viralness.

Or at least keep us in mind for the next competition?

  16. Carol (unregistered) on February 13th, 2008 @ 8:31 am

Any category for Northwest bloggers who blog about NW life AND life in general?

How do I cast my ballot?
