Another 24-hour diner bites the dust
I just discovered that Cafe Minnie’s has shut its doors. [bigblog]
Oh sad day.
While I much prefer The 5 Point and their macaroni and cheese triangles, there have been many a night after closing time where I’ll stop at The 5 Point first, find the wait to be ridiculous, then walk myself down to Cafe Minnie’s. It has proven to be the perfect drunken triangle, (Downtown or Belltown, up to The 5 Point, down to Minnie’s).
Apparently a sign on the front door indicates that the closure is because of $15,649.76 in unpaid taxes. Whoops. That’ll do it.
I think the I’m most pissed about this because ordering one of their Dutch Babies has been on my list of things to-do since approximately 1998, and now I won’t be able to cross it off.
Anyone know of another diner that serves Dutch Babies? I’ve wondered for YEARS what those things are like…
I think I heard they had dutch babies at the Original Pancake House. Anyone have confirmation of this?
Yes, they do have them at Original Pancake House.
Yes, see: here
Huh. I guess I’ve always known Dutch Babies as German Pancakes. My mom makes them every weekend — if you can find a place that does them right, get yourself over there without delay!
The only time I’ve ever gotten food poisoning since I moved to Seattle was at Minnie’s. I learned a very valuable lesson that day, which was that I should not eat at a place that smells like vomit when you walk in. So I can’t say I’m sad to see it go, really.
Dutch babies are delicious!
I love how, via the slog, minnie’s is blaming the smoking ban for their demise.
But now you have me curious about those Dutch Babies.
Minnie’s really ought to blame their mediocre food and excessively awful service for their demise.
Josh, have Ryan introduce you to his mother.
The Dutch Babies at Original Pancake House are pure heaven. I know.. I had them last weekend.
Also, they serve Dutch Babies at Hot Dish, where they have the ultimate pancake:
Gingerbread Pancakes with Custard Sauce.
Gingerbread pancakes with custard sauce?! That sounds AMAZING.
I’ll have to check out Hot Dish or get Ryan to invite me over for Sunday morning breakfast at his mom’s. ;)
Unfortunately, I can’t mourn Minnies. The food was often terrible and the service next to nonexistent. The only things it had going for it were location, hours and the dutch babies.
That they survived as long as they did is kind of amazing.
I have to jump on the terrible service and mediocre food bandwagon. One morning, I waited there for 45 minutes+ for our food and our waitress never came to check on us. Then when I caught eyes with her, she had an, “Uh oh,” look. She forgot to enter our order, but then didn’t say anything to us or apologize when it was an added half-hour on the first 45.
Then, I mistakenly ordered the Eggs Brando, which was eggs in soupy marina sauce. It was sick.
So, I decided I’d only go there for drunken nights.. and hopefully a Dutch Baby. Cause should you really expect great service and excellent food at 3am in an all-night diner?
For Dutch Babies, try Cyndy’s Pancakes on 105th and Aurora N.
Dutch Babies are they’re specialty and it is a great old diner.

Minnie’s closed because of the trans-fat ban, more likely.
I worked at the Broadway one in 1995, and was the worst waiter there, which by my reckoning made me the worst waiter in all of Seattle. I was so bad, I actually succeeded in getting fired, which was almost impossible. I wrote about my career here:

BTW the owner was a drunken anti-semite who eventually killed himself.
David,
Your story is AMAZING. Made my day. Thanks for sharing. I only wish I had the balls to treat customers the way you did during my shitty customer service stints.
