Ballard Locks

It was getting late into the evening last week when we made our way to the Ballard Locks to see if the Salmon were jumping. I used to live about a block away and hadn’t seen them since 2002. I figured it was a little late in the year to see them but man was I wrong.

The locks were absolutely full of Salmon. As we walked over the steel foot bridge we could see dozens of them jumping below. Once we finally entered the glass viewing area we got close up looks at some of the biggest and healthiest looking salmon I have ever seen.

Giant King and Sockeye were working hard to get up stream. A few of them showed deep battle scars from sea lion bites or boat propellers. We lucked out and had a knowledgeable guy standing with us at one of the windows. He related a ton of interesting Salmon facts that I didn’t know.

They will be there well into August so you still have time to check them out. If you’ve never been to the Locks before on a sunny day you are missing out. There is a 7-11 right across the street too with a freezer full of Ice Cream. Some other amenities include a museum, a nice park area to picnic in and close proximity to Golden Gardens.

There are also a large handful of restaurants for just about any size pocketbook out there. A fish stand across the street even offers a free inspirational messages on its signage ‘GOD LOVES YOU’.

The locks have a lot of personality and this is definitely the time of year to check the area out. Best of all it wont cost you a dime to visit.
