UW Housing and Food Services to Open First 100 Percent Fair Trade Coffee Shop

The title pretty much says it all: starting tomorrow, The Atrium Cafe in the HUB on the University of Washington campus will be the first Housing and Food Services run cafe to serve completely fair trade coffee. (Parnassus, a student run coffee cafe, has been completely fair trade since mid-March.)

Perhaps the neatest thing about this is that it shows the power of dialogue – the change was made from extensive talks between Tully’s, Housing and Food Services, and the Fair Trade Coffee Coalition (FTCC) – a group of UW students, faculty and staff. Because of these talks, Tully’s agreed to develop their first fair trade espresso blend, which I think is just a very cool testament to the power of negotiation.
