I Came, I Zaw, I Blogged

I have been walking by the pizza place called ‘Zaw for months now on my way to the Capitol Hill Trader Joe’s, and it is now open. While under construction, the windows were plastered with such groan-inducing slogans as, “Remember when that cool kid moved in on your block? That’s what ‘Zaw is.” (Or something like that.) Everything about it pre-opening tempted me to go into snark overload the likes of which the world of blogging has never seen. HOWEVER, I am just going to try* to present the facts and let you, dear reader, add your well-reasoned thoughts to the comments:

They describe ‘Zaw as “pizza in the raw” (the concept formerly known as “take and bake”)
They use Bob’s Red Mill organic white and wheat flour, and they make a limited amount of a gluten-free dough as well
They will add freshly-ground flax seed to your dough
They sell growlers-to-go for beer
The beers and wines are local and, in some instances, organic
They strive to make pizzas with S.O.U.L. (that’s Seasonal, Organic, Unique, and Local)
They call their Italian flatbread starter an “appeti’zaw” and have pizzas and salads named “The Arizawna”, “The Vietzawm” and “The Caezaw Salad”
They offer delivery via bicycle

So what do you think of the concept? Is it an idea that sounds intriguing enough that you will give it a whirl? Will the overlords at metblogs reach into their vast, deep, pockets to reimburse me for a pizza (I mean, ‘zaw) and a growler?

Seattle Day Trip: South 47 Farm

basket o'chardI don’t know about you, but sometimes I find myself fantasizing about moving to a farm with goats and chickens and fruit trees and a big, sprawling vegetable garden. Then I think about how much work that would entail, and I get sleepy.

It’s times like these when I head out to South 47 Farm in Redmond – a great place to get your farm fix. It’s close enough to Seattle to go for a quick berry-picking run (U-pick raspberries were $5/lb this past weekend – can’t beat that) or take the family and make a day of it.

All of the vegetables, fruits, flowers and herbs are organic, and most are available for both U-pick and  farmstand purchase. They keep their web site updated with a list of available crops, so you can see what’s ready to harvest before you visit.

We went last weekend and picked four pints of raspberries, which are plentiful right now and a good choice for little ones to pick since they grow low, are easy to spot and pull, and have no thorns. We also picked a basket-full of rainbow chard (pictured) – they provide a basket and scissors for clipping; a bouquet of sunflowers, and a pint of blueberries, which are just starting to come into season there. We paid a visit to the resident goats, chickens, and alpacas, and were back in Seattle in time for lunch.

South 47 also has a farm tots/farm kids program, events throughout the year, and they were even setting up for a birthday party when we were there.

Is CSA the new Supermarket?

After reading about how SPUD, the organically local CSA, is kinda taking over Seattle and Pioneer Organics, I did a little investigating. I too want to jump on this local food delivery bandwagon so the research was two-fold. If you’re interested in getting local(ish) food delivered to your door, here’s a breakdown of what’s available in Seattle. Or at least what I had time to look at.

SPUD: Confusing website. Seems like they offer the most though, by letting you choose all your grocery needs, way beyond the produce section. But I have no idea how much anything cost because there were just way too many links, with too many words. I go on first impressions, so I was immediately turned off by this.

Pioneer Organics: Probably the next biggest Seattle CSA enterprise. But if you ask around, there seems to be a lot of discussion on how they seem to give rotten produce every now and then. Like a pear here and a pear there. Sure, they’ll replace it for you, but when you’re paying $35 a month and you have to talk to someone about said rotten pear it just didn’t seem worth it. They do deliver and I like that they could either surprise you with that weeks produce, or you can pick the items on their website, like SPUD.

Full Circle: This one I just don’t get. You have to pick up your food? Couldn’t I go to the grocery store for that? Or the Ballard/Fremont/University District Farmer’s Market? I kept searching.

New Roots: Everything I wanted and them some. Easy website. Not too many links. Personal bins for single people. Price was easy to find. Produce is a surprise and there’s no obligation to stay for a period of time. There isn’t even an order form. You actually get to talk to someone on the phone, without being put on hold and having to listen to Seal over and over again. The only downfall as of yet is that all they offer is produce and coffee. And that during the winter months, they go to California for some of their produce. Both of which are fine by me. I’ve been buying oranges from Venezula for 29 years now, so getting something from Oakland is fine by me.

So you probably know which one I’m picking. And I think everyone has their stories, good and bad, about each service. I believe the best way to choose the right one for you is to just go for it and see what happens. The worst that could happen is that you overdose on brussel sprouts, which might just make your mommy very happy.
