capitol hill’s lost pets : the anatomically incorrect chicken

Chickenflyer

I think that my favorite part about this flyer (“LOST: CHICKEN WITH PENIS”) is the “PLEASE HELP” next to the phone number. The quiet desperation of the plea works to combat the natural tendency of anyone who saw such a chimeric creature to call for an entirely different sort of assistance.

inboxing : lance bass hits home

Picture 1-1Less than a day after the big Lance Bass Coming Out Story [bwe], Chop Suey has already made the most of it, incorporating Lance into their weekly promo list for this month’s Comeback. Not up to their usual pornariffic standards [mb], but they get points for timeliness. After all, it’s not every day that a 90s boy band superstar wannabe cosmonaut reveals that he’s gay.

bananafish : the why seymour posters

I STILL DON'T KNOW WHY SEYMOUR GLASS KILLED HIMSELF... Yet another reason to be glad that the poster ban was overturned [bb] a few years ago: flyers showing up around town in which people work out their literary frustrations. I really really hope that these are the work of someone who just can’t get over the death of the eldest Glass sibling and wants to talk to other people about it (J. D. Salinger and/or afficionados should direct their e-mail whyseymour@gmail.com) rather than some sort of viral marketing for a hardcore band from New York.

update (October 2006): the posters are back, on telephone poles and on the back page of the S.S. Marie Antionette’s ‘zine. Maybe we can expect the results of the art project later this year?

SoDo Sign Zen: No Hammers

sodohammers.jpg

The parking lot of the SoDo Home Depot abuts a railway track — perhaps a spur line or a storage area for the more active line that occasionally cuts off east-west traffic between Occidental Ave S and 3rd South. On one of the boxcars stored there was the curious admonition pictured above. No text, just the imperative against hammers. Any ideas what it could mean?

lego sculpture, 11th avenue

Why yes, that is an anatomically-correct life-sized statue of a triumphant nude man made entirely of yellow Lego bricks.

So much for the soft sell

The current marquee at Beth’s.

I think this says it all.

This can be seen on Denny Way at Pontius Avenue.
The T-Man is a morning D.J. on the local station KUBE 93. I don’t much care for him, but I think I’m warming up to him.

Pub at Third Place Ravenna

Ravenna’s Third Place bookstore, already home to a small cafe and bakery, is making the jump to adult libations with the upcoming (and, let us say, long in coming) opening of a new Pub in the lower level of their building:

Feburary 9th is the projected opening date, and food as well as beer and wine will be served.

the curse of the pride parade signage

chic_12132005.jpg

This morning I noticed a “for lease” sign in the window of the Capitol Hill Internet Cafe. The store had been closed for at least a week, with an explanation of technical difficulties (something about problems with the utilities) causing the temporary shutdown in operations. Now, however, it seems that the all hope is lost for fans as the cafe once lauded for its tasty sandwiches and ahead-of-the-curve free wifi access has shut its doors for good.

Also posted in their large window is a sign lobbying for the Gay Pride Parade to remain on Broadway. This type of signage is beginning to look a lot like an albatross. Remember what happed to the last building that prominently displayed such posters [mb]?

Headbangers’ … Crosswalk?

dontwalk.jpg

Seen on the corner of Melrose and Pine, through the window of Bauhaus while waiting in line for a chai latte this morning.

It’s especially effective when it’s flashing right before the light changes. (The bit of strategically placed tape is actually less visible when you see it live.)

I’m sure this isn’t the first time someone’s done this, but it gave everyone in the coffee queue a chuckle.
