Seattle Greendrinks turns 5 on June 10th, and to celebrate they’re throwing themselves a little par-tay and you’re all invited. The concept of Greendrinks began in England in the late eighties; Gabriel Scheer (just google the name) started the Seattle chapter in June 2003. If you’ve ever attended one of their happy hours (think social networking for the environmentally conscious) on the second Tuesday of each month, you’ll know that this isn’t a bunch of hippies, or corporate wannabes getting together to discuss woulda, couldas. Instead, people like you and me get together to educate themselves and each other, as well as discuss sustainable living practices that can be implemented now.

From the invite:

There will be amazing food and beverage options provided by Full Circle Farms, Herban Feast Catering, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co (launching a new, limited edition brew on the night), Kestrel Wines, Guayaki, DRY Soda, Grounds for Change, Clif Bar, Cha Dao Tea, Mighty O Donuts, Field Roast, and others.

A huge thank you to all of the sponsoring companies listed above, as well as our headline sponsors, The Pear Garden, Full Circle Farms, Herban Feast Catering, Sierra Nevada, Marenakos, Alchemy Goods, Envision Homes, Pyramid Communications, 1ThingSeattle.com, Kestrel Wines, Antioch University’s Center for Creative Change, and the Seattle Art Museum. Thank you, too, to Evergreen Escapes and Propel Biofuels, who will be teaming up to provide biodiesel-powered rides back into downtown, where you can catch a bus home, starting at 7:30 on the evening of the event.

Think it’ll be a snore? Think again! Not only is the location an epitome of the reduce/reuse/recycle ethos, but the event will feature music by KEXP’s very own DJ Riz! You’re encouraged to get to the event in the most sustainable possible manner. Buses to the venue leave every ten minutes from 1st Avenue. Bike racks will be available, as well as the aforementioned rides back into downtown to aid in this aspect of the endeavor.

Visit Brown Paper Tickets, pay your ten bucks ($11.24 with service fee, but hey, it’s cheaper than TicketMaster) and viola! Show up at the secret, to be disclosed located and enjoy the fun. Rumour is that you’ll be part of a Guinness Book of World Records attempt.

Greendrinks will also be featured at the SAM remix at theSculpture Park on Friday, June 6th.

Today is the start of Bike to Work Month. Cascade Bicycle Club is hosting the 2008 Group Health Commute Challenge in which groups of cyclists around the Sound will compete against each other to see which teams can commute the most and possibly the farthest in the month of May. Teams should consist of four to ten cyclists and each cyclist must commit to commuting via bicycle at least five times during the month. There are many opportunities to educate yourself about bicycle commuting.

List of Events
Volunteer Opportunities
Information on bicycle commuting
Education materials (laws of the road, etc.)

REI also offers free bike maintenance classes, as well as a basic bike assistance class for women only.

Please, please remember (and I cannot stress this enough), when cycling in pedestrian areas and on trails with other cyclists and your intent is to pass a pedestrian or fellow cyclist, either ring your bell or call out “on your left”. I often walk along the waterfront and from Sodo to West Seattle, the other day I walked to West Seattle and only one cyclist, ONE out of the 26 that passed me managed to call out “on your left”. As a fellow cyclist, this horrifies me. Stay visible and make your presence known to others.

Whilst heading back to Seattle from Bellingham this weekend, I discovered this little gem inside of a Marysville coffee shop (yes, the evil “S” word). I had a cup of vanilla rooibos that was a little on the sweet side, with a hint of cinnamon and my other half had the silver tip which, in my snobby tea opinion, was “spot on” (say it with an upper-crust English accent, you know you want to)! Do you think full leaf tea would be a good addition to our local chain? Would you sit down for a cuppa?
