Farmers throw one hell of a party!
It’s 11 pm. I’ve had, in no particular order, 2 shots of bourbon, 4 shots of tequila, Greek salad bites, turkey paninis, lox bites, brownie bites topped with blueberries, cherry tomato pizettes, meatball sliders, and strawberry gelato. I have just returned from Growing Washington’s 1st Annual Dinner Party at Mona’s Bistro and Lounge. (We won’t mention the shot of Baileys and the Flatliner I had on the way home at Tin Hat)
I first heard of Growing Washington when I picked up my weekly salad order from Alm Hill Gardens. We love their Wild and Spicy salad mix and I’ve yet to find better carrots anywhere. Clayton Burrows, the Director of Growing Washington, is almost always at the Alm Hill Gardens booth at the Ballard Farmers Market on Sundays. Clayton let us know that Alm Hill Gardens was going non-profit and having a dinner at Mona’s to celebrate.
I’m a little too inebriated (yet I actually spelled inebriated correctly… twice) to go into a lot of details, but I urge you to visit Growing Washington’s website. They offer CSA options and a membership program where you can make a small donation that will allow fresh, local food to be distributed to low income families and those in homeless and rehabilitation shelters.
Chef Micah Windham did an amazing job with the food. Using ingredients primarily from Growing Washington’s farms, he created a wide variety of amazing appetizers that had people lining up and devouring every last bite.

A line for the appetizers at Mona’s (my fiance is the one in the kilt)
Jay Dennison served as the MC for this fantastic event, raffling off a wide variety of prizes (I’m still coveting that Tom Douglas cookbook) and offering “tequila shots with a farmer” throughout the event. Between the excellent food, the free whiskey and tequila from the farmers and the free beer from The Pike Brewing Company, this was an amazingly successful event that I’m eagerly anticipating next year.
Look for more posts on Growing Washington over the next few months.
