Dead Sea Scrolls at Science Center

Obsessed as I am with events at the Seattle Center, I somehow managed to overlook the fact that the Pacific Science Center is hosting an exhibit on the Dead Sea Scrolls. Discovered in 1947 by a Bedouin goatherd, these ancient texts give us a look at history both spiritual and secular from way, way back. scroll.JPG
The exhibit opened on the 23rd of September and runs through the 7th of January, giving you plenty of time to check out exhibits on the discovery of the scrolls, the science used to determine their authenticity, and, oh yeah, the scrolls themselves. image courtesy Pacific Science Center

disappointing headlines : zombies in the news

Scrolling through the headlines this morning, I thought that we’d all have occasion to make use of the suggestions generated by Colin’s post [mb]. “Zombies attack Seattle hospital” [theregister] — sounds straightforward enough, right? Grab your emergency backpack, chainsaw, and head for your favorite escape route.

Alas, those who read the article before fleeing the city will be both relieved and disappointed. The hospital wasn’t seiged by the reanimated brain-hungry undead (i.e. the subject of “Great Brain Robbery” [cheapassgames]), but by some nasty computer-crippling code (i.e., the subject of “the Zombie Hunters” [newyorker]).

Rest easy Seattle, the zombie master has been apprehended and fined $252,000 and is now awaiting sentencing for bringing hospital and military computers to a standstill. For now, it appears that we’re safe from the undead hordes, but that’s no excuse for complacency.

Summer Nights at Gasworks

If you’re the sort of person that’s already planning for next year, you might be interested to hear that the Summer Nights Concert Series will be moving again this year, to Gas Works Park.

Last year, the series was in South Lake Union near the Center for Wooden Boats. I didn’t go to any of the shows, but from what I saw–I work in SLU and live a few blocks up–they were all well attended. (This meant that we all left the office early on weekday concert nights, to ‘avoid traffic’.) But people still didn’t like the location, claiming that it got really cold down there and the view was just not that great. Part of the charm of the Pier 62/63 location was the sunset over the Sound. And since construction on South Lake Union is meant to begin in early 2006, the concert series was forced to find a new home. Again.

The showground is slated to be in that smooth grassy spot between the play area and the towers, and it looks like the harbor patrol is going to make a 100-yard no-entry zone, which’ll put the kibosh on free shows for boaters [P-I]. But it appears that not everyone is happy with this move. The secretary of my neighborhood Community Council is vocally grumpy over the whole thing, claiming troubles with parking and noise and aesthetic values [Times]. Somehow, I don’t think his concerns are going to hold any water, and everything will likely go ahead as planned.

Dead Sea Scrolls

scrolls2.gif
Can you plan a year in advance? If so, then this is for you: tickets went on sale today, December 15th, for the first showing of the Dead Sea Scrolls in thte Pacific Northwest. The catch? They’ll be here Sept 23, 2006 - January 7, 2007. Personally, I can’t plan well beyond two weeks in advance, so asking me to plot out a year in advance is pretty hopeless. But, if you are one of the better organized among us, and know you’ll be here then, tickets are $19.75 for timed entry, at the Pacific Science Center (877-377-1947). In addition to the scrolls, the show will exhibit a collection of artifacts from the desert where the Scrolls were found.
