Wawona Update

About a month ago I wrote a post about the Wawona, the historic schooner that’s docked and disintegrating and under threat from the Mayor in South Lake Union. Last week there was a meeting about the boat’s future, and it looks like the Mayor’s office has back off a little bit from their threat of destruction.

They’re talking about displaying the ship in South Lake Union Park, which is a better proposal than just taking the thing to pieces and turning it into firewood. MOHAI is looking into other land-based displays of vessels, although there are historic preservation ordinances that would require the whole thing to be saved, not just pieces of it.

Although you know, there’s going to be all of this free space at Seattle Center shortly….

Anyway, it seems like there’s a possibility that the thing won’t be smashed to bits, although without a little bit of help it’s going to fall to them on its own soon enough anyway.

Hey Samantha, I’m not sure Wawona would fit inside Key Arena, but it would be much more welcome than the Sonics are these days. Not much more to report on the ship. NWS/MOHAI are still talking to the city.

Also, check out my entry on a proposed city historic district for the wooden piers. It’s all part of Mayor Nickels’ big vision for the downtown waterfront, post-Viaduct.

    Ciao.

    Joe
