miracle watch : owls, politics, cabbage

It seems like the Seahawks bid for the Super Bowl is just one in an ongoing string of small Seattle miracles. Whether fate was already turning a fair eye in our direction (item: record-setting rain streak cut short) or if the football win is the catalyst, things in town are starting to get a little weird:
- item: On Saturday, crowds gathered on 12th and Denny to observe the Capitol Hill Owl. [flickr]
- item: After weeks of intrigue concerning the effect of council member resignation and council member foreign travel on the presidency of the city council, the deadlock between Conlin and Godden dissolved in favor of a unanimous victory for the leftiest member of them all: Nick Licata. [st]
- item: Today, all of Seattle smells like cabbage. What is this mystery odor? Why is it everywhere? What does it all mean? And why did NYC get syrup instead [nyer]?
Please send your theories or reports of other odd occurrences.
update: the Seattle LiveJournal community confirms that the smell is everywhere [lj].
update 2!: an astute reader pointed to the story behind the stink — a wastewater regulator in the U-District that broke down and flooded. [komo]

In re: the smell… It seems to happen more or less like clockwork around this time of year. My pet hypothesis (ie, me talking completely out my arse) is that it has something to do with the water temperature of the lakes changing with the season.
In a nutshell: the lake waters reach a certain ‘warm’ point; some kind of thermal inversion occurs; organic matter lifts from the bottom of the lake to the surface where it can finally decay. It ain’t cabbage you’re smelling - it’s methane…
That’s my theory, anyway.
I’m near the lake and I don’t smell it. In fact, the only thing I’ve encountered this morning was the smell of burning cooking oil.
I had been noticing the smell at a couple of intersections in Belltown last week, but thought nothing of it. Then this morning the common areas of my building smelt strongly - I assumed something had gone wrong with the trash compactor but if this is around the city then maybe it’s something to do with the sewers.

Sounds a lot like a Los Angeles Metblog entry (with some very vivid imagery) from a while ago…

“Odor-controlling machinery.”
What a great band name.
You forgot to close your bold tag.
What an insult to the regal cabbage!
