foodwatch: vegetarian dim sum in seattle!

For years, I’ve usually ducked out of invitations to engage in dim sum rituals with friends. Sure, I can see the fun of gathering around a table and picking tasty treats off of swarming carts. But I’m vegetarian, and the idea of accidentally ordering a pickled chicken’s claw or a dumpling packed full of pig parts was more than I wanted to handle on a lazy sunday. I was thrilled to read that a reader of the Stranger’s weblog noticed that I.D. restaurant Top Gun had been converted into a vegetarian dim sum restaurant [slog].

While I haven’t had a chance to check it out for myself (convincing the traditionalists to make the switch will require a longer, more calculated campaign), I was even more thrilled to find out that the food there is actually decent. Christian Gloddy, of valiant monorail salvation attempt fame, made a trip to the Vegetarian Bistro this weekend and posted a thorough review on his weblog [obviousdiversion], giving it a thumbs-up and some pointers for improvement. This should definitely help with consensus-building.

I believe that we’re making a field trip there this weekend, and if so I’ll give a full report.

Next time we’re both in Seattle, we’ll definitely go there!

Hi Josh, Yeah, I was super excited as well. I too am vegie and had always stayed away from dim sum due to fear of hidden bits. I look forward to trying it this weekend (as part of Sam’s “we” above)
