Bumbershoot line up announced

I love Bumbershoot. I hate Bumbershoot. I remember back when I was a kid that Bumbershoot was a cheap, fun weekend of local arts and crafts and some of the best people watching ever and now it’s become huge and overly commercial and irritating.

Of course I still go anyway. Despite the many valid criticisms levelled at the event and its organizers, it’s still one of the most entertaining three-day weekends of the year.

Click here for the full lineup but some of the musical highlights include:

Friday: Garbage, New York Dolls, The Donnas, Anna Oxygen, Maktub, and The Ruby Doe…and more.

Saturday: Citizen Cope, Bill Frisell trio, Visqueen, Fading Collection, Harvey Danger, and Minus the Bear…and more.

Sunday: Pretty Girls Make Graves, Bo Diddly, Schoolyard Heroes, The Posies, Ani Difranco…and more.

Monday: Devo, Flogging Molly, Tegan and Sara, Kinski, The BeGood Tanyas, and, you guessed it, more.

I was just getting ready to post about this — the full lineup looks surprisingly good. While there aren’t many acts that jump out as amazingly huge or “can’t miss this or I’ll die” compelling, they’ve assembled a really nice collection of performers and attractions for the festival.

The “… and more” is pretty accurate. As I read the schedule I kept finding myself surprised by how many things I wanted to see.

I’m just glad to see how many local acts are getting prominent billing and placement. For the past several years it’s struck me as odd that in a city with such a rich musical culture the big excitement has been generated by outsiders.
