starbucks liability watch

As Starbucks stores run out of their beloved “holiday cups” a new breed of white paper versions are making their way into consumer hands. In addition to the usual words of wisdom (”Careful, the beverage you’re about to enjoy is extremely hot”) the new cups feature quotes from writers, actors, scientists, and others of varying degrees of fame as part of their The Way I See It initiative. [starbucks]

While these are apparently intended to “get people talking” in the tradition of “good, healthy discussion” they necessitate yet another warning: “this is the author’s opinion, not necessarily that of Starbucks.” Because nothing says healthy discussion like pre-emptively disavowing platitudes to avoid litigation.

Imagine the consequences if Starbucks flat-out embraced wild-eyed madness along the likes of this Laurence Shames quote, “Why are we inspired by another person’s courage? Maybe because it gives us the sweet and genuine surprise of discovering some trace, at least, of the same courage in ourselves.”
