We don't really use rare devices (though we have a fondue pot, but that was a wedding gift), and the bulk of the devices that we do have were actually gifts from parents. I mean, if you had to go out and buy a new appliance for the challenge, that wouldn't be all that legitimate. Or if you needed something that was so rare that on one would have it (though off the top of my head, I can't think of what that would be). But even if you didn't have a pasta maker, you can still make homemade pasta. It wouldn't be as pretty, or possibly as thin, but it'd still work. I agree with your position on appliances.
