I admit that I’m not a fan of the television show. I don’t think I saw an entire episode of the last season. For some reason, it takes me a while to warm up to stand-up comedy, so the little bits shown on-air left me baffled. Thus, I took a companion who actually watches the television show to the Season 6 World Tour show, to provide background and expert commentary.
Emceed by finalist Louis Ramey, finalists Marcus, Jim Tavare, Jeff Dye, and LCS winner Iliza Schlesinger riffed on relationships, religion, and current events just long enough to get the audience going without wearing out their welcome. According to my companion, the material presented was new; certainly it wasn’t the same as the video clips I watched on the Last Comic Standing website, in preparation. Louis Ramey was my personal favorite performer of the evening; I’ve added his name to my very short list of “comics to go see when they are in town,” right after Margaret Cho and Eddie Izzard.
By contrast, the majority of the audience seemed to be there for Ms Schlesinger… judging by the chants of “I-li-za! I-li-za! I-li-za!” She did win, after all, and for a reason. Ms Schlesinger’s take on traditional femininity had me and my companion crying with laughter.
The Last Comic Standing World Tour resumes after Christmas, in Jacksonville FL, and continues through January 31, 2009. If you happen to be adjacent to one of the performances sometime next month, I highly recommend getting tickets. It’s a good time.
