Readings, signings, and other events vaguely literary for Saturday, December 13, 2008

* 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM: Local author Ann Wendell will be at the Museum of History and Industry to discuss and sign her book, Frederick & Nelson, as part of MOHAI’s celebration of the much loved and sorely missed Seattle landmark. The Holiday Tea & fashion show is sold out, but you can remember F&N’s glory days in the hundreds of vintage photos featured in Wendell’s book. The signing is not listed on MOHAI’s calendar, but if you doubt my veracity, you can call: 206-324-1126, Museum of History and Industry, 2700 24th Ave. E., Montlake.

* 2:00 PM: Speaking of places dearly loved and sorely missed, Robin Shannon will be at Elliott Bay Books to promote her book, Seattle’s Historic Restaurants. Frederick & Nelson’s Tea Room is not the only local foodie landmark to vanish. Remember The Dog House? Okay, so it was a pit, but it was a lovable pit. Shannon chronicles culinary nostalgia with vintage photographs, postcards, and menus.

* 6:00 PM: Fantagraphics Books & Gallery is throwing a party to celebrate their second anniversary. Join Ellen Forney, Jim Woodring, Jacob Covey, Peter Bagge, Jim Blanchard and special guest Ted Stearn; enjoy the BEASTS exhibition; and boogie down with Peter Bagge’s new band Can You Imagine? featuring producer Steve Fisk on keyboards. Woo-hoo!

* 7:30 PM: Also at Elliott Bay Books is Randa Jarrar, with her debut novel, A Map of Home. A bildungsroman that moves from Kuwait, to Egypt, then Texas, A Map of Home shines because of Jarrar’s sparkling prose and interesting character voice, not because the originality of the subject matter. And there is nothing wrong with that.
