We took advantage of the great weather over the weekend to make a day trip up to Bellingham. Bellingham is about a 90 minute drive from Seattle – a little longer if you get off I-5 near Burlington and take Chuckanut Drive [2], which we did. Chuckanut Drive is a scenic road that winds along the cliffs above Samish Bay. With plenty of spots to pull off and admire the views of the San Juans, it is well worth the detour.

Chuckanut delivers you right into Fairhaven [3], a quaint suburb of Bellingham with brick buildings from the late 1800’s that house shops and cafes. We always end up at the Harris Avenue Cafe [4] – a good all-around brunch spot and bakery.

From Fairhaven, you can take a walk along the waterfront South Bay Trail [7] to Boulevard Park [8] (about 1/2 a mile.)

If you peer out over the elevated boardwalk, you might spy a starfish hanging out in the water.

Boulevard Park has grassy lawns, picnic tables, a small playground, and a Woods coffee shop [11].

At this point, you can continue along the South Bay Trail to downtown Bellingham [13] (about 2 miles) or if you’re lazy like us, you circle back to Fairhaven to get your car and drive downtown. Downtown has more shopping, and a hoppin’ farmers market [14] from 10am-3pm on Saturdays with a good mix of food and craft vendors.

When you’re done exploring downtown, stop at Mallard Ice Cream [17] for an indecision cone – one scoop, two flavors. Just what you’ll need to keep you going on the ride back to Seattle.
