Ms. Led, Goodness at Mural Ampitheater

The final KEXP sponsored Concert at the Mural for the year took place Saturday, August 23, with what for me was a dream-team pairing of bands. First up was Ms. Led (guitarist/vocalist Lesli Wood, bassist Matt Menovcik, guitarist Peg Wood and drummer Steph Hasselman), one of the best bands in Seattle. The high-spirited band plays their irresistible pop-punk songs that blend of the personal and the political with passion and engaging energy. If you’ve never seen them, do yourself a favor and check them out next chance you get: Friday, 9/19 at the High Dive in Fremont. (Lesli Wood will also be playing a solo acoustic set at Back Room at Piecora’s with the also awesome Mia Boyle on Saturday, 8/30 and will be playing another set and interviewing authors Joshua Furst and Jeff Parker at Bumbershoot on Sunday, 8/31.)

If you didn’t know that Goodness (singer Carrie Akre, bassist Fiia McGann, guitarists Garth Reeves and Danny Newcomb and drummer Chris Friel) broke up a few years ago, you wouldn’t have guessed from their performance; despite having only played a handful of reunion shows scattered over the past few years, they’re still as tight a band as ever and their fans are still as loyal. It’s a real tribute to the band that even on a muggy summer evening they can still lure their audience up off the comfortable lawn to crowd around the stage. They played a full set of some of their best loved songs with their usual flair and polish. Carrie Akre demonstrated for the umpteenth time that she’s just about the most charismatic performer around with both her powerful singing voice and her sweetly goofy stage patter. The member of Goodness clearly have a good time playing together and it shows. Their next show is at the Tractor on Saturday, November 22.
