Joule Urban BBQ Series, Better Late Than Never

I hope you’ll forgive me, Seattle. You might not. Heck, I’m not sure I forgive myself. What is this horrible thing I’ve done? I failed to tell you about Joule’s Urban BBQ happening on Sundays from now until August 17th.

I’d never been to Joule when my husband mentioned this series. We’d driven by often, but never stopped. We didn’t know what we were missing. More after the jump, but here’s a picture of my dish from last week (the theme was Beef).
Joule BBQ
That’s from left to right: Cold Beef Salad, Pulled Short Rib Sandwich, and Marinated Flank Steak.

The names of the dishes didn’t do them justice. In addition to the plate pictured, we ordered Beef Tartar (excellent) and skipped out on the green salad with bone marrow popcorn (our one regret). I could have eaten the sandwich every day for a week and not gotten sick of it. The salad was amazing as well and I even loved the Beef Tartar (something I never thought I’d say).

Today, their theme was Food on a Stick. Our lunch today is pictured below.

Food on a Stick

From bottom left, clockwise, you have: Grilled bread (with a garlic sauce), a grilled Caesar salad with anchovy, a corn “dog” (which was really a house made sausage), grilled shrimp with green mango, a beef kebab with eggplant, and lamb. Later we ordered a chicken kebab because we were still hungry and heck, each stick was only $3.

So why should you go? Well, aside from the fact that the food looks amazing, it tastes amazing as well. The bread was amazing, the Caesar salad was crisp with just the right amount of dressing. The corn dog had my husband wondering if he’d been missing something all these years by not eating corn dogs. I assured him that this was no ordinary corn dog. The shrimp were large and cooked perfectly, and the beef was tender. (I am not a big fan of lamb, so I can’t really comment on that one, but the husband loved it).

They’ve got a handful of tables and a nice little bar area. You might have to wait during peak hours (right around noon or during the dinner hour), but it is worth the wait and they will even bring you an appetizer while you wait if you ask. Drinks are self service, and include beer, wine, sangria, and soda. Desserts include shaved ice in a variety of flavors as well as at least one other cooked item. We had grilled apricots with fresh whipped cream.

All in all, we spent a little over $30 with tip. Well worth it. Next week is all about chicken, followed by pork, and finally, patties and dogs.

The lamb was excellent. A nice little mix of lamb and rice, with a fantastic mint/yogurt/something sauce.

I’m most looking forward to the pork week.
