end of summer festival news: bumbershoot & musicfestnw

I was beginning to wonder if Death Cab for Cutie had something against us. Bumbershoot was about the only big summer festival where they didn’t have a prominent spot on the bill. At last, with the latest round of updates to Seattle Center’s Labor Day extravaganza, the situation has been remedied. The band will get its shot at possessing local hearts. Here’s the list of new acts — and yes, the most thrilling addition is SUPERCHUNK opening for DCFC:

Just added to complete the 2008 Festival lineup:
Death Cab For Cutie :: Superchunk :: Tapes ‘n Tapes :: The Weakerthans :: Two Gallants :: Sweet Water :: Cheb I Sabbah & 1002 Nights featuring Riffat Sultana :: Vicci Martinez :: Black Eyes and Neckties :: Tiptons Sax Quartet :: Mono in VCF :: Thee Emergency :: Vince Mira :: Manooghi Hi :: Feral Children :: Speaker Speaker :: The Physics :: The Tripwires :: Sage :: Grieves :: Choklate :: Das Vibenbass :: The Valley :: Velella Velella :: The Maldives :: Shim :: Shane Tutmarc & The Traveling Mercies :: Mariee Sioux :: The Round (featuring Damien Jurado, Jen Wood, Buddy Wakefield and others) :: The Lonely H :: Nick Vigarino :: The Staxx Brothers :: Lushy :: New Faces :: School of Rock: Northwest All-Stars :: Jazz Northwest: WSU Faculty Ensemble

the full schedule, including previously-announced headliners Beck and Stone Temple Pilots: [bumbershoot]

Just a couple days after Bumbershoot closes, our pals in Portland are throwing a party of their own. Challenging our own beloved festival in size (and, most notably, price [ed: don't forget, there's more to bumbershoot than music]), they’ve announced a four-day, fifty-dollar event that will be running from 3 to 6 September. Once you see the lineup, catching the train down to Portland on Tuesday for Music Fest Northwest seems like a great idea:

It basically looks like NXNW2, in both line-up and staging (multiple venues, spread throughout the city = not a festival).

But still, this brings up the question, why doesn’t Seattle have a multi-venue music orgy like so many other cities? Venue owners hate each other? City too oppressive? What?

That’s a great point. I guess that the Capitol Hill Block Party is kind of a multi-venue, but it’s still a festival. There was also the thing in Ballard this spring, but we could do with a more concerted citywide effort.
