Smith Tower Circa 1913

Wow, this picture of the Smith Tower under construction really caught my eye. It was lovingly dropped into our group pool by Seattle Municipal Archives, who is always a source of interesting historical documents and images. Thanks!

If you look very carefully in the pyramid at the top, you can see the old water tank hidden in the steel girders. That’s now gone, replaced by a very upscale condo in a 1999 remodel. Since the tower was essentially built around the damned thing, when the welders disassembled the tank they had to carry the pieces down to street level via elevator.

Imagine the corporate exec walking up to the elevator at 8 AM and meeting a big burly guy carrying several pieces of rusty, 85-year-old steel. "Don’t mind us," says the union tradesman, "we’re just disassembling your office building. Hope you don’t mind."
