Bar grub

Smith Sweet Potato Fries

What’s your favorite bar grub? I adore the sweet potato fries at Smith (Capitol Hill) and have fond memories of happy hour at Dragonfish back when I used to attend happy hours.

To me there are very few bar food staples to be had at many bars anymore. Everything has been all glamored up (not saying that’s bad, just not the old staples). I yearn for tavern style pizza (where the bar makes their own dough and buys the ingredients at the local grocery store), crinkle cut fries, hand formed hamburgers that are "All American" (nothing too fancy, something like the Dockside Burger at Bad Albert’s and Lenny’s), and sandwiches made with freshly sliced meat like in a deli. Oh and if there’s meatloaf that’s been handmade or hand cut fish and chips? Count me in!

On the other hand I do like going to fancy pants type places to get Yellow Fin Tacos, pomme frites with fun dipping sauces, and fancy Kobe beef sliders.

Man, now I’m all hungry and want to drink. This does not bode well for a Monday.

tonyb, i think the satellite can take care of your needs. the burgers are hand-formed, the fries are crinkle. plus they’re two for one on wednesdays (take a friend, two is far too much food).

The Satellite does have good burgers. Know anywhere I can get a Tavern Pizza? The last one I had was at this weird old sports bar in Bothell that’s no longer there.

The Satellite is okay, if you don’t mind waiting…and waiting…and waiting for a table server who may or may not - eventually - wander over to see if you want anything. Like food. Or a drink.

That is exactly why I will not return to the Satellite. The one time a group of my friends and myself went, the servers refused to come to our table because the first person to arrive bought a drink at the bar before picking a table. The rest of us (7 in number) did not get service so we walked out. The explanation? Because our friend bought a drink from the bar, the servers assumed we didn’t need service.

I usually eat alone when I eat meat (my wife is a vegetarian and it’s hard to find time for dinner with my friends lately), so I sit at the bar. In the past I haven’t had a problem at the Satellite, but will remember if I go with a group.

Now what about Tavern/Bar Pizza? Something besides Northlake. I’m looking for a tavern or a bar that makes their own pizza and sort of conforms to this style:

    Bar Pizza

Ed Levine goes into this in his book, and you can read an excerpt on Slice. Ed says, "It’s usually very thin-crusted to (I’m guessing) leave plenty of room in the eater’s stomach for beer. It’s baked in a gas oven that may have replaced a coal oven if the bar is old enough. Bar pizza is made with decent, commercial, aged mozzarella and comes topped with canned mushrooms, standard pepperoni, and, if you’re lucky, house-made sausage." http://slice.seriouseats.com/archives/2007/06/a_slice_of_heaven_bar_pizza.html
