May Day at Gelatiamo
It’s May Day, and Gelatiamo has just re-opened after a nice remodel, and these two forces have conspired to give you free gelato on 3rd from 11 - 1 today.
I went from eating gelato at least once a day for two weeks to not eating it at all, so stopping by to taste a couple of days ago was a real treat. The gorgonzola flavor was a bit of a taste sensation, although it’s a little weird to be eating something that is cold and creamy and at the same time tastes like cheese. Not really my style. But try the mango. And the apricot. If you ask them to, they’ll make gelato spaghetti, mixing two flavors together on a plate through a special spaghetti-ifying machine–try the caipirinha and the blackberry mixed together, and pretend that it’s warm outside.
Owner Maria Coassin grew up in a town in north Italy, working at her family’s bakery, and she’s just as warm and friendly and enthusiastic as everyone I met in Italy this month. Stop in and ask the people behind the counter what they recommend, and if Maria’s there, get her talking about Italy, which she will do at a rapid pace and with extensive use of her hands. (She told me that I was crazy for taking a motorcycle ride through Naples, which, true.) They make everything right downstairs, on equipment they had shipped in from Italy, and it is delicious.
Really, though, try the mango this afternoon. For me.

that is 1000% more enticing than B&J’s "free scoop day" anytime.
…and BR’s 31 cent scoop day. I think thats today too.
Its like a conspiracy by big ice cream to up our ice cream consumption this week.
Do they have any non-dairy / vegan gelato? That’s the one thing that I have trouble finding in this city–I could really go for a soy gelato, and milk isn’t an option for me. Or sorbetto, maybe?
I think they said that some of the sorbetto was vegan, but I was too busy stuffing it in my face to get any further with that.
