Thursday Traffic Warning: Downtown

Copied from Metro’s website:

On Thursday, May 1, from about 4:00 to 6:30 PM bus service will be affected by the May Day march along S Jackson St and on 4th Avenue in downtown Seattle, and in the Seattle Center area.

During this event buses will remain on regular route and will serve their normal stops, however crowds and traffic may cause delays of one hour or more on Metro and Sound Transit service that operates through downtown Seattle.

Delays caused by the event in downtown Seattle and in the Seattle Center area will affect operations throughout Metro’s service area, as any bus that must travel through those areas will then be late along the rest of its route. Therefore, transit customers in other parts of King County may also be affected by the downtown area event.

Fourth Avenue downtown is expected to be the most heavily affected street, however congestion may occur anywhere in the area.

Fourth Avenue bus service will not be rerouted; it will be delayed behind the march.

Transit customers who want to avoid being affected by this event are advised to:

* Plan accordingly to avoid the downtown Seattle and Seattle Center areas if possible.
* Leave the downtown area prior to 4:00 PM to avoid significant delays.
* To get through town, use transit service on another street, or use the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel.
* If you ride a bus that travels on the affected streets during the event, be prepared for possible significant delays - buses will not be rerouted and will likely operate very late.
* Expect crowded buses.
* Tune into media sources for traffic and other updates.

Metro will not be able to provide specific service updates during this event, and Metro staff will not be able to tell customers where any specific buses are along their routes. It will likely take 1-2 hours after the event for all affected service to return to its normal schedule.

Metro encourages anyone who is planning to commute to the downtown area or participate in this event to use transit services on Thursday in order help ease vehicle congestion.

Every effort will be made to operate all scheduled service during this event, but significant delays are expected.
