Baby gorilla named Uzumma

Those of you that have been waiting with bated breath for the outcome of the gorilla naming contest [mb] can now exhale: the gorilla’s name is Uzumma, which means “bringer of joy” in in Igbo [WPZ]. The name was suggested by 3 1/2 year old Rhys Olson.

Apparently, the gorilla had some surgery in January for a congenital spine abnormality. The surgery happened at Children’s, and she recovered well and her mother took her back in. (Aside: the Zoo has its own blog? I’m really hoping they let the apes in on that action.) I’m a sucker for stories of interspecies interaction, so I’m glad that they managed to help the endangered baby. Now I’d like to see her and the baby tiger meet in a cute-off.
