The Alaskan Way… Monorail?
Just when you thought it was safe to abandon all hope of commuting by Monorail, our esteemed governor has brought it back to life once again. This time it is as possible replacement for the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Instead of the unsightly (and currently unsafe) viaduct, Seattle residents will have the option of riding a sleek, new, too-wide-for-its-own-tracks monorail all the way from West Seattle to Wallingford.
Soon, the Monorail Agency’s website will be updated to show the new plans. On either end of the rail will be massive 28 story parking garages that will put Microsoft’s new parking garage to shame. Drivers will be able to park all day for the low price of $125, or for an hour for only $25.
There will be five stops along the way, each having a Starbucks and a Tullys on each side of the platform. Peet’s Coffee, relative newcomer to the Seattle area, has been shut out of the market completely, though they vow to sue Starbucks for, in their words, “massive market oversaturation resulting in consumer fatigue”.
To avoid the fiasco of the last monorail project, no vote will be taken. A coin will be flipped to decide between the Alaskan Way Monorail and the surface street option. Latest reports are that the coin is a 1926-S Liberty quarter.
We’ll be covering this story as it develops.
