- As previously mentioned, Girls Rock is at SIFF.
- Grand Illusion repeats “70s sleaze classic” Teenage Hitchhikers and continues their “Tough Guys Don’t Dance” tribute to director Phil Karlson with a gritty western from the 1950s called Gunman’s Walk and Scandal Sheet, a murder mystery centered on a New York tabloid.
- It’s Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat at Central Cinema. Starring Tallulah Bankhead in a story by John Steinbeck, Lifeboat holds the unbeaten world record for being filmed on the smallest set ever used in a film but what you’ll remember even more than the great technical expertise that went into shooting the movie is its tense, engaging plot and brilliant performances from its stars.
- Midnight at the Egyptian this weekend is Gimme Shelter, one of the best made musical documentaries ever. Filmed over the course of the 1969 Rolling Stones American tour, it ends with the infamous free concert at Altamont where a gun-wielding spectator was killed during the show.
- It’s all about technique and design at the NWFF this weekend with The Dot and the Line, a collection of creative film shorts from the 60s and 70s; Helvetica, a documentary about graphic design that focuses on one of the world’s most commonly uses fonts; Seattle Moves, a discussion about the creative processes and technological challenges of motion graphics designs; Entropy, a collection of new short works from innovative designers, directors and VJs from around the world; and a discussion of the history of computer graphics in film led by graphics design whiz Alvy Ray Smith.
