Metro Classics returns
Fans of classic movies have plenty of reasons to be happy it’s Wednesday–Metro Cinema has brought back their Metro Classics series, every Wednesday through April 9. This time around there are three specific themes. The first is “Three Musicals with Gershwin Score” which kicks off tonight with Shall We Dance?, the lovely film in which Fred Astaire seeks to win the heart of Ginger Rogers on a transAtlantic voyage by ship and includes such classic Gershwin tunes as “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”. It’s An American in Paris on February 20 and Funny Face on February 27.
The second theme for the series is “Three Westerns with Scores by Folk Rock Musicians”. McCabe & Mrs. Miller with its Leonard Cohen score plays on March 5. The following week on the 12th it’s the Bob Dylan scored Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, followd on March 19 by Dead Man, featuring the music of Neil Young.
The final theme in the trifecta is “Color/Music” movies: the charming The Red Shoes, on March 26, the funny The Blues Brothers on April 2, and one of the best bad movies of all time, Purple Rain on April 9.
