Starbucks Goes rBGH Free
Starbucks has just recently announced that all of their “core dairy products” (milk, whipping cream, half and half, and eggnog) are now rBGH-free. rBGH has long been given to cows to increase milk production. This hormone has several side effects including lameness, udder infections, and reproductive problems. Due to these side effects, cows are given more antibiotics.
While this is a good move (and a long time coming) for Starbucks, it too comes with an unfortunate side effect. Starbucks is planning to discontinue stocking organic milk. According to the company, the decision to offer organic milk was made to accomodate drinkers who wanted to avoid rBGH.
I applaud Starbucks for finally taking the step of going rBGH free, but I hope they realize that there’s a lot more to organic than simply the lack of rBGH.
