H&M to Open 3 Seattle-area Stores by Fall

For the fashion (and cost) conscious comes great news from Swedish clothier H&M [#]. Via P-I reporter Craig Harris [p-i]:

The company said it would have a two-level, 19,000-square-foot store in University Village; a 25,000-square-foot, two-floor store in Southcenter; and a 16,000-square-foot store on Pike Street in downtown Seattle.

It’s about time. Of course, this contradicts earlier reports that H&M was to open a store in University Village by this spring [m-b].

I went to two H&M stores in San Francisco this past week and was deeply unimpressed. The clothes are attractive and cutting edge in appearance, but the quality of the fabric and workmanship is deplorable. As a result, H&M clothes look shoddy and cheap on anyone who doesn’t have a body like a clothes hanger. For example: Most of the flimsy knits have big, heavy labels sewn into the side seams at hip level, making a thick ugly lump in the line of the clothes. Want nice clothes with a designer look? Head for Anthropologie; they understand detailing and no one surpasses them for use of color.
