Stay away from the north side of Capitol Hill

The corner of Summit and Belmont.

There’s been a fire in an apartment building on Summit Ave near the corner of Belmont. Summit Ave north of Mercer is closed entirely and traffic is backed up all around the area. My apartment stinks from the smoke.

I hope nobody is hurt.

Update: I talked to a firefighter who said that nobody is hurt (that they’re aware of) and the fire occurred in an empty unit. I counted 6 fire trucks, 4 police cars, and 4 ambulances/aid cars. It’s quite the scene. Scary, too. The building is right next door to mine. Not exactly what I thought I’d come home to this evening.

Update 2: There are apparently a lot more units on the scene than I counted. Seattle LJ notes 19 emergency vehicles crowding a two block stretch of Summit Ave [livejournal].

Update 3: I was able to get a shot of where the fire was; it looks like it was contained to just two apartments, one of which was unoccupied [flickr]. Also, for anyone in the area, refreshments (Gatorade and frosted animal crackers) are being served on the corner of Summit and Belmont [flickr].
