celebrate : repeal day

On this day 74 years ago, the 21st Amendment was ratified thereby repealing federal Prohibition (aka the 18th Amendment). Now, it doesn’t take much for me to celebrate by drinking a cocktail, but to celebrate the freedom to drink a cocktail by drinking a cocktail - well, that’s just the bee’s knees.

The official Repeal Day site (of course there’s an official site) encourages Americans to “Simply celebrate the day by stopping by your local bar, tavern, saloon, winery, distillery, or brewhouse and having a drink. Pick up a six-pack on your way home from work. Split a bottle of wine with a loved one. Buy a shot for a stranger. Just do it because you can.” [#] Great advice on any old day, but if you’re game for more fun, local bartender extraordinaire and mind behind Seattle’s cocktail bar, Vessel [#], Jamie Boudreau, will be celebrating with a little more formality. There will be tasty drink specials for everyone, but also if you so choose, “anyone who comes in dressed to the period will get 33% off of their bill (Prohibition was in 1933, in case you were wondering why 33%). We are hoping that we get a lot of people dressed up, as everyone wearing fedoras and stoles, with big band and 30’s jazz playing sounds like a heck of a good time to me!” [sc].

Hells yeah, that sounds like a heck of a good time. I will be there with bells (and borrowed stole) on as soon as I can get out of the office today - Vessel will be opening early for those with less draconian office hours. I highly suggest you run down to Bernie Utz [m.g] and get yourself a fedora as well. A fun 1930’s type party sounds like just the thing to alleviate the rain-doldrums, doesn’t it? If you can’t make it, well, I’ll post up some pictures to flickr in the morn.

Happy Repeal Day!
