This weekend at the Seattle Center

Sure, it has its flaws, but I love the Seattle Center. There’s always something going on there, even if it’s just sitting by the International Fountain with a latte watching people go by. The Center always has an interesting mix of people, too–I always enjoy being there on days when the opera, Bagley Wright, the Seattle Children’s Theater collide with a major rock show or sporting event at the Key.

This weekend there are a ton of things happening there, starting with the Space Needle’s “Toast the View” happy hour. A mere $5 gets you tastings of both of their featured wines of the week–this week the 2005 Viognier and 2005 Dedication Red Blend by Cougar Crest–and there’s also food and music.

The Festal series continues this weekend at the Center House with the Hmong New Year Celebration which includes food, dancing, cultural shows, music and activities for the kids. Hmong food is awesome, just in case you didn’t know.

The Seattle Thunderbirds have games Saturday and Sunday at the Key Arena: they play the Tri City Americans Saturday at 7:05 and the Spokane Chiefs at 5:05. Both should be really good games.

All the theaters have plays: it’s Disney’s High School Musical and The Big Friendly Giant at the Seattle Children’s Theater, Contemporary Classics at the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Murderers at the Leo Kreilsheimer Theater, a preview of The Cook at Bagley Wright, To Kill a Mockingbird at the Intiman, and as mentioned in my Weekend Film Agenda, the documentary film Soldiers of Conscience is being screened at SIFF.

PLUS: On Saturday there’s the Race Conference 2007, a stamp show, the Alive! Expo, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Gladiator’s Assault. The stamp show and Alive! Expo continue Sunday and Seattle’s Child hosts a Education & Enrichment Fair.

One question: is the $5 for the wine tasting at the Space Needle on top of the admission charge, or is it $5 to go up and taste wine? The website doesn’t really make it clear, but I was wondering if anyone who’s already been could clarify.

One would be a rather expensive wine tasting, the other would be incredible value.

    Eldan,

I called the Space Needle–what an ordeal that turned out to be. Dear businesses: STOP MAKING IT SO #$!@%#%^ HARD FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS TO TALK TO A HUMAN BEING–and the $5 is in addition to your observation deck ticket. I should know how much that is since I got trapped into hearing the recording approximately 95 times but I think the trauma has blocked it from my memory.

So…it’s not a super great bargain wine tasting if you’re looking for a super great bargain wine tasting, but if it happens to be a nice night and you don’t mind blowing the $N for the observation deck ticket, it might be kind of fun.

    Zee:

Thank you for doing that. I tried the Space Needle’s phone number, got a robot and decided I couldn’t be bothered - I appreciate you saving me the trouble. I’d agree with your assessment - if one was thinking of going up the Space Needle anyway (and I’m tempted, given that it’s a lovely day and I’ve never been) then tacking on $5 extra for wine and nibbles is grand.
