basketball : love the one you’re with

Let’s face it. At this point, Seattle’s relationship with the Sonics is like that time you went to a different college than your high school boyfriend and neither person wanted to be the bad guy and be the official breaker-upper. And so, secret animosity developed between you and eventually you couldn’t stand to think about that stupid jerk and why couldn’t he just man up and be the one to break it off?

But that’s okay. We don’t need the NBA in Seattle. Seriously. I mean, first of all, there’s former Husky, Brandon Roy (swoon) [wiki], and the Trailblazers just 3 hours south [#]. So you could always just take a trip down there to get a fix. And furthermore, does Chapel Hill have a pro team? Raleigh? Nope, and yet people in that area somehow still manage to see a couple of basketball games every year [wiki].

Yes, maybe it’s time for us Seattle basketball lovers to let the Sonics go and instead embrace a new lover team: the Huskies. Stop reading those sad headlines [pi] about the new girl from Oklahoma that stole (okay, purchased) away your former sweetheart, stop trying to find pennies in the couch to buy back her love [times], and start boning up on your college ball knowledge [times].

Sure, there are plenty out there that insist that true basketball fans prefer the NBA to the NCAA, but quite frankly they are wrong. I would back this up with facts, but facts are boring and really, I just want to make another stretched metaphor about the Sonics as a bad relationship because I’m tired of reading about them possibly moving away. MOVE ALREADY so we can move on. Besides, UW and the Pac-10 are going to be hot this year [times]. I will even go so far as to predict that we’ll see some non-Connecticut Husky action come March.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. If you’re still reading, you already know that UW men’s basketball officially starts on Monday against Seattle Pacific [gohuskies]. Think of it as a first date. It’ll be awkward and weird, but perhaps the start of something glorious and fulfilling.

If you don’t want to support the Huskies you can always support SPU–their basketball program isn’t quite so flashy and well-known as UW’s but it’s a good program.

Chapel Hill has something that’s consistently better than the nearby pro team ;)

    Go Heels!

Why College Basketball is better than Pro:

In the pro’s, it’s all about the name on the back of the jersey, but in college, it’s all about the name on the *front*.

I would argue that it’s becoming increasing about the back of the jersey on college sports as well. One of the reasons I can’t stand college sports. At least we all know why the pros are there. Instead in college we get this crap about how they are there for an education, come on they are there to try to live the pipe dream of making it to the pros. So they usually get some sort of crappy degree and then live off their name in their home town the rest of their lives. What a great tradition. OK, sorry about that, had to get my Monday grouchiness out of the way.
