Has The Stranger Lost The Plot?

Total number of Slog posts decrying Tim Burgess doing PR work for Concerned Women for America in 2003, something he has said publicly he regrets and wouldn’t do again if he could: 16

Total number of Slog posts saying anything at all about Venus Velazquez or Bruce Harrell, who I just found out this past weekend were running for City Council: 3

Total number of Slog posts mentioning any other Council candidate: 0

It’s pretty clear at this point that Dan is H-A-W-T for Tim Burgess. Is it the bald head? The beard? The career as a policeman? Dan’s personal need for attention to mask his personal insecurities and low self-esteem? Who knows. But at this point, the VVM-run Seattle Weakly is doing a better job of covering local politics, and they’re NOT covering local politics per mandate from Corporate.

A month to go before the election, and all I know is that I’m voting for Tim Burgess purely to spite Dan Savage. And I’m voting for Prop 1 to spite the Sierra Club, but that’s another post.

Can The Stranger’s Public Intern put on a suit of armor and thwap Dan on the head with a rubber chicken for me? Thank you.

Yeah. I really don’t get it. It sounds like Burgess is far better than Della on almost every city-related issue that the Stranger deems important. I can’t imagine how they can get out of endorsing him.

I understand why they think suspect “We don’t like abortion. We value the sacredness of marriage between a woman and man.” as being coded, but I don’t see anyone getting elected in America anytime soon that “likes” abortion and doesn’t value marriage. Not that city council is going to be setting abortion policy anytime soon anyway.

Exactly. Thing is, this is 90% Dan going off, and that’s why it’s starting to get old. Does he really think that electing Burgess is some massive step backwards, enough to offset another four years of Della mediocrity? Will he leave Seattle because suddenly it’s gay-unfriendly?

And there’s this whole coded thing about family values that Dan seems to be choking on. Thing is, the Stranger’s mishmash of things they support and oppose is family-unfriendly. Their screams for density are pushing unmarried twentysomethings into town and pushing families, especially poor families, further out, with poorer schools and longer commute times.

The “every child needs a father and mother” meme of his needs to be replaced with “every child needs a day care worker because they barely see their parents anymore.”

Congratulations! I can totally see social ultra-conservatives supporting Burgess and getting excited about him possibly getting elected. If you are a conservative, good for you and your stealth candidate. However, what is disturbing is seeing SOME of the more progressive minded people being fooled by this wacko. It is no different than supporting someone that supported and wrote favorably about the KKK and this was only a MERE two years ago. Don’t give me that anti-religion crap because so many Democrats and liberals are also religious. This race is so beyond religion and “gay marriage.” Burgess raised millions for Concerned Women for America, one of the most dangerous backwards thinking fundy groups in the country. Their EXTREME anti-gay campaigns are responsible for the suicides of thousands of young people. Their ideal role of women as servants for men is disgusting. Again, ultra-conservatives rejoice you’re a mere month from victory!!!

Oh please. Erica couldn’t serve if she was at the Old Country Buffet.

(See, it’s funnier of it’s Luby’s because that’s self-serve, but they don’t have that here, so, um, yeah.)

I hold no brief for the Stranger but if you are going to take folks on using stats you had really better check yours before posting. All ya gotta do is google. And Burgess, he needs to learn that if you lie with dogs you’re gonna get fleas. He DID work for those far-right nut jobs and moderates and lefties don’t like that.

I think the problem is that there’s not much to say about the other races.

They know they’re in favor of Venus in the Venus/Harrell race and Harrell’s done nothing with all that money he has to establish himself, so they’re probably thinking that Venus wins in a walkover. All I can say is that I’m not very fond of the abilities, character and philosophies of either candidate, so picking a winner in that race is like choosing between pieces of crap.

And the other races, last I checked, were either uncontested walkovers or not very hotly contested walkovers. The Sally Clark/somebody named Judy Fenton race comes to mind.

As for Burgess… while morally questionable, he has definitely shown himself to be a stronger candidate than Della, almost by default. Della’s got the character and productivity of a broom.

Served by someone who doesn’t know that when riding a bus route she’s not familiar with, you should sit near the front?
