Weekend Film Agenda

  • Creepy movie at the Grand Illusion: The RedeemerL is a 70’s “classic” slasher flick. Not creepy: Five Centimeters Per Second, a luciously rendered anime film that tells a three part story about separated school chums who meet again as teens and as adults and is told from their perspectives and the points of view of people around them.
  • Central Cinema screens The Apple, a 1980 sci-fi flick about the “dark side” of rock’n'roll starring Catherine Mary Stewart who probably never complained about a role again.
  • The excellent Local Sightings festival continues at NWFF, featuring all kinds of films and programs. If you like movies, there’s something here for you.
  • SIFF screens Sweet Smell of Success, a film that takes such a sharp look at the machinations of the PR industry that it practically draws blood. Released in 1957, its cynical, noirish take on the media is as current as if it were newly made.
  • Midnight at the Egyptian this weekend is Spice World, a movie that’s so bad it’s…well, still bad.
