- Remember when KOMO had that big ‘blogger meetup? Now they have segment where controversial [dailyweekly] Big Blogger Mónica Guzmán tells home viewers about the what’s on the internet. Kind of like how CNN had those women who read from weblogs off a giant plasma screen? [buzzworthy]
- Good news for people who use Flexcar: they’ve temporarily escaped the rental car tax. [slog]
- Sad news for people who like buying crazy items for cheap: the Boeing Surplus Store is closing forever in December. [midbeaconhill]
- Capitol Hill baby-naming contest in full swing. Perhaps something squirrel related? [chs]
- Adjust your idioms according to the results of the second round of the Cliche Rotation Project. [defectiveyeti]
One of the more cringe-inducing aspects of the debut appearance was the fact that the tv anchor had to pretend (we hope she was pretending) that everything Ms. Guzman was telling her was news to her … even though most if not all of the items, such as the S.L.U.T. t-shirts, had been on the tv news without benefit of blogginess days earlier. Perhaps for this week’s appearance, assuming there will be one, the P-I and KOMO folks can take a tiny bit of time to dig up something that appeared only on The Big Blog, or at least “only online.” Maybe the dog-eats-Doritos timekiller. Or something.
I did enjoy how the anchor was (or felt that she needed to pretend to be) scandalized by the S.L.U.T. acronym, refusing to utter the word “slut” on the air and only allowing a close-up of the t-shirt. I also liked how no one pointed out that since its inception the project was officially called a Streetcar and not a Trolley.
Is it just me, or is “old media presents a guide to ‘hot’ websites as if people can’t just browse the web themselves” so 1995?
it is not just you.
TV news has a way of making everything seem vapid. The original post about the SLUT on the Big Blog was nearly edgy. Then, Mary Nam invites Monica Guzman to talk about it in a day late/dollar short segment and it becomes almost unbearably lame. I’d be pissed if I had bought one of those shirts.
You sourpusses. News at 10 (and again at 11) — old media is lame and even lamer when it does “news” on new media. But don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. Cool that Guzman scored the airtime and the exposure. Hopefully she can use the attention for good and not evil. Maybe she will say something nice about MB or WSB next time. Oh wait. Probably not. Go back to your bitching and whining.
Also, it’s not a contest to name our baby. We already settled on Josh. We asked for some Capitol Hill name ideas just for a bit of fun and got way more attention than we deserved but we’re definitely not naming the kid Cappy or Waldo or Aloha. I do like the squirrel idea, though. How about Squirrely Anevasive?
Sure, it’s cool that Monica got some airtime. She did a nice job and seemed comfortable on camera. Maybe next time she goes on the air she can correct the P-I’s story about your Capitol Hill baby names post.
The only problem with calling your kid Squirrely is that it’s already been claimed as an alias for a certain Defective Yeti offspring.
