  • A gray whale died after four members of the Makah tribe went on an illegal hunt with a fishing net, harpoons, and a semi-automatic. • The Times gets religion about ‘blogging thanks to Bumbershoot, their first experiment in handing over the keys to the castle to slightly edited ‘bloggers from the Vera Project. After a dig at other unnamed news organizations whose “free-for-all” reader commentary often becomes a “sewer pipe” to turn off, editor-at-large Mike Fancher seemed convinced that there just might be a future in this crazy new citizen journalism. It’s easy to see what the Times got out of the bargain — “a very beautiful complement to the work of the professional journalists” by three writers “considered experts by their peers”. This is probably great exposure for the writers (except that the paradigm-shifting Bumberblog didn’t even merit a link in the editorial), but I’m a more than a little bit surprised that the d.i.y. Vera doesn’t already have a weblog of their own. [times]
