friday agenda (extra free): Blitzen Trapper at the crocodile
What’s this? A free show at the Crocodile tonight? Starring Portland sextet Blitzen Trapper, whose Wild Mountain Nature dares you to try to assign it to a category and chuckles warmly when you give up for the futility of it all. This is not to say that they’re genre-defying in the sense of creating something so wildly new that no one has yet had time to think of a shiny name for it, but more that they hop around so rapidly from track to track that just when you think they’re part of the neucampfire jugband revival movement they switch gears and throw out something noise garage jam experimentalism and swing through shimmery pop atmospherics (last year’s “Summertwin” and this year’s “Sci-Fi Kid” spring to mind)
In any case it’s a fun (if not schizophernic) ride and the price is right. Jennifer Gentle [myspace] headline.
