When I told my boyfriend that we were going to see Femi Kuti tonight, he asked me “Fela Kuti’s son?” and immediatley began tapping rhythms out on his knee and swaying wildly. Yes, Femi is the son of Fela (and a woman named Remi–get it? I think that is a great way to name your kid). Fela is the pioneer of Afrobeat, the musical genre marrying African tribal rhythms with the new world Jazz, and Femi follows in his father’s footsteps, providing a beautiful sound that makes everyone want to stand up and move around like they’ve been possessed by Mexican Jumping beans.
