SIFF : … and the Golden Space Needle goes to …

Situated a hundred feet above Seattle Center, the awards for the 33rd Seattle International Film Festival were presented after a brunch at the real Space Needle.

Taking the “Golden Space Needle” for audience favorite was Outsourced [siff], directed by local filmmaker John Jeffcoat, who was present to accept the award and the accompanying glass art creation made by Joey De Camp of the Chihuly Studio:

Along with thanking his cast, crew, and family (for putting up with his frequent trips to India to make the film), he announced that he and the producers have elected to self-distribute their movie with openings expected this fall. If you’d rather not wait that long, SIFF added an extra screening this evening at 9:30 pm at the Egyptian.

For the Bible Tells Me So [siff], which won the audience award for best documentary, is also getting one more showing. For a film about the ways that fundamentalist Christianity has villainized homosexuals and homosexuality, it is a surprisingly uplifting portrait of several families, including Richard Gephardt’s and first gay Episcopal bishop Gene Robinson’s. See it tonight at the Harvard Exit at 6:30 pm.

Daniel Waters was also in attendance to claim his trophy for the audience’s affections as the best director of the festival. Claiming that he’s often had trouble fitting his movies into a genre, he said that from now on he’ll just start calling them “Seattle Cinema”. Rush out this afternoon to catch the last screening of Sex and Death 101 [siff] at 4 pm at the Egyptian.

(Stay tuned, there were a lot of other winners of juried awards — I’ll post the list of the rest of the winners later this afternoon Sons took the New Director Award, Shotgun Stories claimed New American Cinema prize, Out of Time was awarded best documentary, and Fish Dreams grabbed the Heineken Red Star Award. The complete list of winners, including the special jury mentions, short film awards, and FutureWave winners is now online [SIFF].)

update: Eastsiders hoping to catch the winner of the New Director Award can sprint over to Lincoln Square. Sons [siff] also scored an encore screening at 7 pm.
