siff watch : crazy love
given the reportedly stellar weather in Seattle, the likelihood of skipping out of the office early for a movie seems slim. Nevertheless, an intriguing second-showing at SIFF might capture your afternoon attentions. If you’re feeling brave, take a date — if the subjects of this documentary can make it, then there’s hope for anyone.
Crazy Love [siff] – True to its title, this bizarre and criminally obsessive love story seems insane on multiple fronts. The sensational details were splashed across tabloid front pages and later on the Sally Jesse Raphael type talk show circuit. Not having been alive during the initial headlines or an active follower of the daytime chat shows for the later chapters, I had no idea where the documentary, which unfolds through a series of interviews with the principals, their friends, and family, was heading making each bombshell all the more shocking upon dramatic revelation. Given the unbelievable and shocking nature of the long saga of Burt Rugach and Linda Riss, Dan Klores’s treatment is surprisingly gentle and non-judgmental. I almost wished that they had attempted to further plumb the depths of the story, but perhaps their history defies explanation. (Friday, June 01, 4:30 PM, Pacific Place Cinema)
