Wow - I did not know that about the dojo! I lived on First Hill during much of the 90's and worked at the old Fed Courthouse, and I remember shopping at that store quite a bit - it was the only thing anywhere near before the QFC came in at Pike. I can remember being happy to see one of their most outgoing employees working w/ a different grocery chain later. Now I work at the Central Seattle Public Library, and I am so glad there's a grocery back in the area, convenient to downtown.

That Shop Rite actually had a long and storied history. Bruce Lee's best friend owned it and their was a relatively secret dojo in the basement where he trained a select group of martial arts afficianados. The story, told by Pacific Northwest Magazine about 6 or 7 years ago, is fascinating and worth digging up in your library.

I lived on 8th & Spring from 1995 - 1997.

The Shop-Rite (aka Crack-Rite) was at 8th & Madison, down the hill from Vito's. (I lived in the old seagoth building, the Paul Revere, at 9th & Spring, in 1998.)
