A Thriller with a Frites Chaser

The first of SIFF’s midnight movies starts tomorrow at midnight [#]. (Side note, it’s not actually tomorrow at midnight. Technically it’s Saturday at midnight. Once the clock turns to 12:00 am, it’s no longer Friday. But, I suppose we get in line on Friday, so the movie is advertised on Friday. But still… minor peeve here.)

What’s not a peeve though is that either before or after the movie (or both), I get to have Frites. Mmmmm. Frites.

I’ve already written about cupcakes, but there’s another food that deserves it’s very own store. Fries. What better place for a Belgian Frites shop than right next to Neumo’s and just a stone’s throw or two from the Egyptian? It’s called Frites Belgian Fries (of course) and they’ve got these golden salted golden brown wedges of spuds down to a science.

You can get a paper cone of fries in three different sizes. Along with your fries, you can choose from a wide variety of dipping sauces.

Pick up a cone and a couple of dipping sauces before you get in line for the midnight movie. Or stop in on the way home and pick up a cone. My only regret is that they’re not open for lunch.

Siff makes it easy to see shows or get involved even if you can’t shell out for tickets by letting you pick up or schedule work shifts doing whatever you want for them using Shiftboard. Some shiftboard teams require permission to join. What neat is that I found out about SIFF because I already had a shiftboard account working at another place (KEXP - yea!). I think bumbershoot is also using shiftboard if thats your thing.

What’s your favorite dipping sauce at Frites?

I once tried to claim I was always up for a show at Neumo’s and my boyfriend corrected me: “No, you’re always up for Frites”…

I’m not sure I have a favorite. I’m generally not a ketsup person, but tonight I think I’ll try one. As for the mayos, the garlic mayo was super garlicky (which is always good) but the rosemary mayo wasn’t as rosemary-y as I wanted.

So what’s yours? Any recommendations for a dipping sauce to try tonight?

I’m a fan of the horseradish aioli. Any ranch-based dipping sauce (the pablano esp.) is always a delicious way to boost the late-night alcohol-absorbing fat content, too!

All that Frites really needs is a better mechanism for holding the fries and the sauces. Otherwise, they should employ the Dutch custom of pouring the sauces over the fries and providing miniature forks.

They used to have the miniature wooden forks when they first opened, but I assume they dropped them fairly quickly, either due to the expense or lack of availability (or the potential liability issue of some drunky accidentally swallowing one).

And my first choice is always Frite Sauce, which is similar to the Garlic Aoili, but not quite as garlicky, IMO. If you’re going to go for a tomato-based sauce, I recommend the Curry Ketsup. It’s a bit smokier than regular ketsup, with a definite “kick”.

I agree they need a better holster system. Although pouring the sauces over the fries does make it impossible to try two sauces (unless you mix).

I’m a huge fan of chipotle ranch or poblano ranch type sauces. I guess I know what I’m getting tonight then.

Ok, so curry ketsup and some spicy ranch. Any others?

Sundried tomato mayo forever! Even though I dislike sundried tomatoes AND mayo, which really speaks to its awe-inspiring power. Kind of like ketchup plus ranch, except a million times better.

Ok, I’ve heard of ‘ketchup’ and ‘catsup’ but never ‘ketsup’.

    Etymology per Wikipedia.

Yeah, yeah. That’ll teach me to post before drinking coffee…

    Heh. I was sincerely curious…

As I typed it, I thought ‘hmmm, that doesn’t look right. Maybe I should change it to catsup.’ But then the lack of caffeine kicked in and my fingers started trembling and whoops! There went the post button.

Wow, after “Them” last night at the Egyptian, I didn’t have much of an appetite (and I mean that in a good way - that movie was damn scary).
