  • As if you need another reminder about the Miranda July extravaganza [slog]. Her shockingly good Me and You and Everyone We Know (shocking only in the context that it opened the Seattle International Film Festival in 2005, a spot that had been occupied in the previous year by the Notebook) won a mantle full of awards at Cannes and introduced the world to a hilarious new emoticon. But before that, there was a website called Learning to Love You More, which continues to propose art-making assignments and reports the results (the first, “Make a child’s outfit in an adult size” was filed [#] was posted on 17 May 2002; the most recent “Make an educational public plaque” arrived this month [#]). Yet, there is more! Like making art, performing, and writing. She is also very likely to be the favorite person of someone. Tonight’s event coincides with the very recent publication of an exceptional collection of her short stories called No One Belongs Here More Than You. It comes in fluorescent pink or yellow; contains a great deal of excellent writing that had previously appeared in such esteemed publications as the New Yorker, McSweeney’s, and the Paris Review; and is available in better bookstores throughout the country (including Elliott Bay, who will be selling copies at Neumo’s). For the very low price of free and an early arrival, you will also be able to see Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond, Sarah Rudinoff, “Awesome”, and Joshua Roman before Miranda July reads something and is interviewed by Christopher Frizzelle. If there is any life left in you after all of this, stick around for a dance party. 8 pm [neumos]
  • What could keep you from the “musico-literary extravaganza” endorsed above? The previously-mentioned Eric Andrew McLeod Howk Lashes Benefit [mb] runs from 6pm until (at least) midnight. I already told you about how you can feel really good about drinking well whiskey drinks, donating money, and watching “The Adventures of Bubble Girl and Accordion Boy”. Here are some other recent developments: superstar stylist Cutter McLeod will be working his haircutting magic tonight (suggested donation, $30) to make you look prettier while raising money. Muffin McLeod has been baking cupcakes, which, in addition to being reliably delicious, will also be for sale. And if you have the means and inclination to contribute $200, you will be handsomely rewarded with a portrait photo session with Kristen McLeod of blushphoto.net. Look at how great she can make me in a moosehead look [flickr] and imagine what she will do for your head shots! 6-12 pm [mcleodresidence]
  • If it wasn’t for these two mega-spectacular offerings, Kara Jesella & Marisa Meltzer reading from How Sassy Changed My Life: A Love Letter to the Greatest Teen Magazine of All Time would sound like a pretty compelling option, wouldn’t it? 7 pm [university bookstore]
