A Visit to the Tacoma Art Museum
I took a trip to Tacoma on Saturday to (finally) check out the Frida Kahlo exhibit, Images of an Icon on display at Tacoma Art Museum [site] through June. I was very pleased by the exhibit which presents images of Kahlo taken by photographers, photojournalists and friends. The exhibit is well laid-out and well-curated - one need not be an expert on Kahlo’s history to understand and appreciate the exhibit. The notes on each piece are explanatory without being condescending
This was my first visit to the Tacoma Art Museum in its current incarnation. I was surprised by its size–for some reason I imagined it bigger–but the building itself is beautiful and conducive to viewing all sorts of fine arts. I stopped off at the Paul Strand exhibit (ending May 23) because he’s one of my favorite photographers and found that exhibited to be just as well-arranged as the flashier Kahlo exhibit. The Art Resource Center is a great part of the museum, allowing visitors to learn more about exhibitions on display and about all manner of art and arists even beyond the museum. The Open Art studio was a hit with my party, giving us all the chance to use some of the inspiration we’d developed from visiting the museum. All in all, a thumbs up for the Tacoma Art Museum. I will definitely visit again.
