Meet Your Farmer’s Market Vendors: Zane and Zack’s

It’s time for the second installment of Meet Your Farmer’s Market Vendors! Today’s vendor is Zane and Zack’s. I found Zane and Zack’s at the Ballard Market happily offering samples of Honey Chipotle Hot Sauce, Honey Jalapeno Sauce and Spicy Honey Mustard Sauce.

I interviewed Sam, Zane and Zack’s Director of Culinary Development, creator of the Honey Chipotle Hot Sauce, and father of Zane, Zack, and Hans.

Products: Honey Chipotle Hot Sauce, Honey Jalapeno Sauce, Honey Habanero Sauce, Spicy Honey Mustard. Their newest product is Three Brothers Pepper Sauce. This is a new product and not available for sale yet, but you can sample it at the market. I tried it and it has a very strong, quick heat to it without being overly vinegary.

Length of time at the market: Zane and Zack’s has been at the Ballard market for about a year. Sam says it was a bit of a rough winter, but it was worth it.

How he got started: Sam has three sons. Zane, Zack, and Hans. The two older sons, Zane and Zack, help keep bees. So they always have some surplus honey around. Sam loves to cook and one day he cooked up a batch of honey chipotle sauce and brought it to a BBQ. Everyone raved and so he started making more. A painting contractor by trade, he started sampling the sauce out to his customers and to bars and restaurants. He came to the farmer’s market once with nothing but a table, chips, and product and went home with over $300 in sales. That clinched it and he started working the markets regularly.

Zane and Zack’s

Favorite part of the market: Sam loves talking to potential and future customers and offering samples of his products. He says the Ballard Farmer’s Market is the best.

Where to buy: Zane and Zack’s sells their products at the following farmer’s markets: Kent, Issaquah, Ballard, Renton, and sometimes Madison/Capitol Hill and Wallingford. You can also buy their products at the Made in Washington Stores as well as several other Washington markets [#].

Recipe recommendation: Slather the honey mustard over some lamb and smoke it.

Other random cool stuff: If you buy one of Zane and Zack’s products and take a picture of yourself with the product, they’ll put you on their website. [#]. They have a market challenge. If you can eat a whole jar in 2 minutes, you get 2 jars for free. (You do have to buy the first jar). Please, only 18 and older for the contest. Zane and Zack’s were also recently reviewed online at the Hot Zone [#].

I gotta say, I love their stuff, even if they are turning corporate >=) (ok, I don’t think they’re that corporate, but, man, being sold at Whole Foods? That’s a step up the ladder)

I think the best is the spicey honey mustard which isn’t on their site. It is *excellent* with some sausages from Skagit River Ranch.

Altho the honey chipotle stuff, mixed with a little sour cream, for a dip…. that’s quite heavenly too.

And no, I don’t work for them =)
