weekend agenda : bird, tapes, sam
in case you need anything else to fill your cinco de mayo, kentucky derby, start of boating, comic book reading, five dollar skiing, windermere cupping saturday:
- The new Seattle Art Museum is now open, and now that they’ve given members and media a peek at the new digs, they’re celebrating by inviting the rest of the riff raff to see the place. Starting at 10 am, they throw open the doors for a 35 hour marathon complete with a full slate of indoor and outdoor performances, photos with Sammy the Camel, fish throwing, FANKICK dancing, balloon animals, face painting, and maybe while you’re there you might get a chance to see the art collection, too. It’s open through the night; so what better occasion to indulge your From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler fantasies? free, tickets required [sam]
- Tapes ‘n Tapes are in town. Clell Tickle video [youtube]. Need I say more? Fine, Ladyhawk & Harlem Shakes. 8p, $13 [neumos]
- Until you’ve seen Andrew Bird you have no idea what it means to be a professional whistler. Live, he weaves vocals, whistles, violin, guitar, xylophone together with looping pedals and entirely avoids coming across as anything close to a gimmicky one man band. On this tour, he’s joined by collaborator Martin Dosh on drums and bassist called Jeremy; so this one may be a little more rock show than magic show, but predict jaw-dropping goodness. With Broken Social Scener Andrew Whiteman’s Cuban folk-inspired Apostle of Hustle. 8p, $20 [showbox]
looking ahead to Sunday: start scouring your social network for spare tickets because Explosions in the Sky are even more stunningly beautiful and epic live than they are on record. Their latest, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, follows in proud tradition of their catalog of destructively grand instrumental post-rock, which even the casual listener might remember from Friday Night Lights or the trailer from Shopgirl. They play their first of two nights at Neumo’s. On the same night, Morrisey takes over the Paramount!
